She went to appear in many other famous films like Waqt Hamara Hai, Ghatak: Lethal, Beqabu, Baazi, Gangstar, Chupa Rustam, Qila, Andolan, and many more.

Mamta was approached for many other movies with Ajay Devgan, Bobby Deol, Shahrukh Khan, Sanjay Dutt, Akshaye Khanna, but she kept on rejecting big projects like Agnaary, Mr and Mrs Khiladi, Bandahan, Aunty No 1, Aflatoon and Shikary because of the money matters.

She gained fame after posing topless (but with her arms crossed over her breasts) for a photograph that appeared on the cover of Stardust, a popular Indian film magazine in September 1993. She was charged under India’s obscenity laws, and found herself under attack from both conservative religious groups, and women’s groups. The outspoken actress lashed out at protesters, calling them hypocrites.
Mamta Kulkarni was finally convicted in July 2000, and fined Rs 15,000. However, this caused yet another controversy because she appeared in court in a burqa to evade photographers, which led to death threats and protests from the local Muslim community.

There were whispers of her being secretly married to fight master-turned-director Tinu Verma. There were also whispers of her being attached to the underworld, a nexus that allegedly brought her back to the sets of Raj Kumar Santoshi’s China Gate after being thrown out. And then at the cusp of the millennium, Miss Kulkarni just disappeared.

Finally, she quit movies after her last appearance in the 2002 film Kabhie Tum Kabhie Hum. Then she moved to New York.

Mamta Kulkarni, who had fallen in love with the drug lord Vicky Goswami, reportedly married him while he was in prison for trafficking in contraband substances. The 52 year-old Vicky had converted to Islam in prison in Dubai and secured an early release for good behaviour.
